It’s a fact. Every day we get older. And every day our parents get older too. As our parents age and need more help with everyday management of their household finances and other decisions, there are legal mechanisms that can help. It is important for all adults to have a Durable Power of Attorney in place. With this, a trusted person (spouse, son, daughter, etc.) can assist in managing or completely manage their husband/wife/dad/mom’s personal finances and responsibilities. These documents can be set up in a way that requires a disability or inability to act (with a doctor’s ok) or outright access upon signing the documents. Different options are available for different circumstances. With these documents, if Dad forgets to pay his mortgage, Son can intervene with his Durable Power of Attorney. Aging is hard, and parenting our parents is too. Be prepared for all of life’s unknowns with a Durable Power of Attorney.
